What is Autoethnography

Autoethnography analysis is the kind of research where a person self reflects on the anecdotes and experiences that they have had in life. They then tie these experiences to socio-economic, political, and cultural occurrences to give more insight/ understanding into these phenomena.

Autoethnography is usually used as one of the most crucial research methods when it comes to dissertation writing. Qualitative research methods are instrumental in instances where the main aim is to get an insight into the way people think. This mode of research is usually used to determine not only what people are thinking, but it also gives an insight into why they think so.

Understand that when autoethnography is used as a research method, the reality is usually shaped and constructed by the interactions between different human beings and the environment they live in. Here, the researcher aims at interpreting phenomena based on the meaning they get from observing and interacting with the target audience in its natural setting.

Understand that the findings of this research method are the direct observations of the phenomena under investigation through the individual participants' eyes. This then makes autoethnography a very subjective research method. Advantages of Using the Autothenography Research Method

As we have seen, autoethnography usually involves analyzing the narratives given by the research participants. One of the advantages of using this method as a research tool is that it gives us access to the participants' private thoughts. This enables us to get greater insight into the influence of the phenomena under research on the population. This ultimately leads to the creation of a wealthy paper.

Autoethnography has an uncanny ability to get people to reflect on the narrative presented. This means that they can relate their lives with the phenomena being researched. This is very important as it helps in enriching the lives of the participants too.

This research method also has another advantage: it helps the researcher get the information they need quite easily. The fact the participants are enabled to answer any questions from their perspective and direct the conversation wherever they see fit makes them willing to give out more information, leading to the collection of rich data with a lot of ease.

Disadvantages of Using This Research Method

As with every research methodology, autoethnography has its limitations too. One of the main disadvantages of this research method is that it can be highly limited in its conclusions. Understand that this research technique ultimately relies on the analysis of the participants' perspectives. This makes the findings very limited to the personalities of the participants. Another disadvantage is that where a participant has an unpleasant connection with the phenomena under study, the research may turn in skewed results. The participant will only be willing to give a bad review of the phenomena, instead of being truthful.
